For many of the first 30 years of my working life I was a banking specialist but first and foremost I see myself as a lifelong learner.

After leaving school in 1979 and spending eight years with Midland, becoming an associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in 1983, I soon branched out, moving from Merseyside to Manchester in 1987 to gain more knowledge of corporate banking with Hill Samuel.

Working there as a portfolio manager began my journey of working with other businesses, a journey I continued at Birmingham Midshires in a national sales role, specialising in commercial mortgages and housing association lending.

That period coincided with my completing a masters degree in marketing from Liverpool John Moores University, a qualification which gave me an even better understanding of how businesses work, and taught me the right questions to ask to help owners take their businesses forward.

After returning to banking with Yorkshire in 1997, going on as managing partner to open the bank’s first branch in Liverpool in 2003, I continued to expand my horizons, completing my coaching diploma with the Coaching Academy and also becoming a master practitioner in Neuro-linguistic programming.

Why did I leave banking to move into coaching? Easy, really: being a professional business coach allows me to work with real people on a daily basis and make a positive difference to their businesses and their lives. It’s as simple as that.

I am a former treasurer at Oxton Cricket Club, have been a committee member at Liverpool Speakers’ Club, the Chairman of the Liverpool Institute of Directors and also the President of Liverpool Institute of Bankers. I am currently a voluntary director at the charity-owned Bluecoat trading company.

Outside work, I have three children and am a Tranmere Rovers supporter and a keen sportsman, playing cricket and football and enjoying running and skiing when I get the chance.
